Chasing the Templar Knights
Want to embark on a historical journey shrouded in mystery? Of course you do! Today, we’re off to chase the ghosts of the famed Templar Knights.
The Templars were a wealthy Catholic military order dating back to the 12th century. Always costumed in distinctive white hoods bearing a single red cross, the Templars were a powerful and feared force, closely tied to the crusades and known for its secret ceremonies.
First, we’ll visit Tomar, an ancient town and former religious center of the Templar Knights. We’ll explore the hallowed halls of the Convento de Cristo, which is considered one of Portugal’s greatest monuments. In Tomar's small historical center we can also find an old synagogue, open to the public, which survived centuries of inquisition.
Then, we’ll enjoy a short boat ride to Almourol Castle, a medieval masterpiece full of lore and legend perched on a tiny rocky outcrop in the middle of the Tagus River.
We’ll finish the day at an expansive property in the Tejo region. This is also home to handsome horse stables, as the estate originated as a stud farm breeding Lusitano horses for carriages, bull fighting and dressage. After a tour of the estate we’ll sip and savor the local wines paired with some light snacks.
