Coimbra & central Portugal 2days
1st day - The University of Coimbra is the oldest in all of Portugal and the 8th oldest in the world, established in the 13th century. We’ll wander the hallowed halls and stroll past paintings of the college Deans dating back to the school’s inception. We’ll tour the campus complex and even visit the 18th century library and book vault. Perhaps you’ll even spot some of the student guides cloaked in traditional black woolen capes from centuries past. After so much history it will be time to drive by the country and explore the windmills of Penacova. Sit in one of the many terraces over Mondego river, the largest Portuguese river, and try a “Nevada”, a local pastry. Overnight in Coimbra.
2nd day – A short drive from Coimbra lies the ancient Bussaco Forest. Designed by Franciscan monks almost 400years ago, it had an important battle during the French invasions. Today it’s a peaceful, and gorgeous, botanical garden, perfect for a leisurely walk. Central Portugal is known for the suckling pig and we may have some for lunch. Afterwards, it will be time to visit Caves Aliança a wine cellar and museum. Visiting requires walking about a mile in the underground as this is the only national underground museum. Naturally, the tour finishes with a wine tasting. Return to Lisbon.
